Adelaide to Clare Valley

Clare Valley

Your first leg takes you from Adelaide into the undulating green hills of the Clare Valley, one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions. The valley is famous for its world-class Riesling, so much so that the region has a dedicated 33km gravelled cycleway to take you on a leisurely ride through the vines. Connecting the historic towns of Auburn and Clare via the old railway line, the Riesling Trail bike track offers boutique wine tastings, picturesque views, and access to local vineyards. Clare Valley is home to around 30 wineries, most of which are family-owned, with approximately 35 cellar doors complemented by plenty of farm-to-table dining options and gourmet indulgences. Park the campervan and stay overnight to ease yourself into the Adelaide to Flinders Ranges drive.

Distance & Driving Time: 143km / 2 hours.

Clare Valley to Melrose

Alligator Gorge

Continue north to the historic town of Burra, established as a globally recognised mining centre during the 19th-century copper boom. With the introduction of advanced Cornish mining technology, the town became the world’s second-leading producer of copper. The Burra Heritage Passport Trail offers a self-guided tour past stone cottages, heritage-listed buildings and mining ruins. Your drive to Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges, resting at the foot of Mount Remarkable, leads to hiking, biking, and outdoor adventures. Be sure to explore the walking trails in Alligator Gorge, known for its vivid red rock walls and tranquil outlooks. Overnight options range from cosy country pubs to picturesque campgrounds with room for motorhomes.

Distance & Driving Time: 132km / 1.5 hours.

Melrose to Quorn

Pichi Richi Railway

Immerse yourself in the outback atmosphere, with majestic native gums and rugged ancient rock formations, before taking in the grandeur of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. For a quirky twist in your Adelaide to Flinders Ranges road trip, stop at the Sansouci Puppet Museum at Wilmington, known for its 1000-odd toy patrons. Originally named “Beautiful Valley”, Wilmington makes a great lunch spot among the pretty native flora gardens and olive groves. Then head to Quorn, a quaint railway town and the start point of the Pichi Richi Railway, famous for preserving the Flinders stretch of Australia’s Ghan line. Take a heritage steam train that winds through the dramatic Pichi Richi Pass, or visit the train station and step into the past. Quorn’s old sandstone buildings and classic, friendly pubs make the town a welcoming overnight RV stop.

Distance & Driving Time: 64km / 42 minutes

 Quorn to Wilpena Pound

Wilpena Pound

The heart of the Adelaide to Flinders Ranges drive, this is where the landscape really starts to transform. Driving into the Flinders Ranges, you’ll see craggy mountain peaks rising dramatically from sun-drenched open plains. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the roadway, including emus, kangaroos, and wedge-tailed eagles. The highlight of this leg is Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheatre of mountains and one of the most iconic sights in South Australia. Base yourself at the Wilpena Pound Resort or nearby campgrounds, which put you on the doorstep of world-class hikes. Climb to Wangara Lookout for the sweeping panorama overlooking the Pound, join a guided cultural tour, or take a scenic flight for an aerial view of this vast natural wonder.

Distance & Driving Time: 122km / 1 hr 45 minutes

Explore the Flinders Ranges

 CRVSCFlindersranges6.jpg

Brachina Gorge

Soak up the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage by exploring Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges, with 500-million-year-old rock formations. Aboriginal cultural tours are an enjoyable way to learn about the Adnyamathanha, which translates to “Rock People”, their traditions, Dreaming Stories, and ancient stone art sites. Wildlife lovers will be delighted by glimpses of yellow-footed rock-wallabies, wedge-tailed eagles, and the countless reptiles sunbaking on the rocks. The Flinders Ranges also encompass a certified International Dark Sky Preserve under stewardship to protect ecologically sensitive areas from light pollution. Once the sun goes down, look up for some of the most spectacular stargazing in Australia.

Optional Trip Extensions

Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby, Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary

  • Parachilna: Almost 40 minutes’ drive from Flinders Ranges centre, you’ll find a tiny outback town boasting a somewhat notorious Prairie Hotel & Outback Lodge. The restaurant features the “feral feast” mixed-grill menu of kangaroo, emu, and camel. Walk off your unusual meal at the pristine Parachilna Gorge just 13 minutes away.
  • Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary: About 3.5 hours behind the wheel of your RV heading to the far-northern Flinders Ranges, you’ll find a conservation reserve offering biodiverse, paleontological and geological phenomena. See impressive granite and volcanic rock formations almost 2 billion years old, along with 555-million-year-old fossilised seabeds. Privately owned, you are permitted to explore some challenging 4WD tracks along the ridge to witness the astonishing mountain scenery.

Returning to Adelaide

Take the motorhome back via the Barossa Valley for more wine and food stops, or head through Port Augusta and follow the coast south. Either way, it’s best to break up the journey with overnight stops to savour more of South Australia’s wine, heritage, and scenery.
